Oakland‘s water system violated a drinking water requirement in September 2026, the Town of Oakland said in a notice dated Oct. 17, 2026. The town said the violation was not an emergency, but it is telling customers because turbidity readings were high too often.

What the town reported

Water samples for September 2026 showed that 5.3 percent of turbidity measurements were greater than 0.3 turbidity units, according to the town’s notice. Turbidity is cloudiness in water. The town monitors it routinely because it shows whether the water supply is being filtered effectively. The standard allows no more than 5 percent of samples to exceed 0.3 turbidity units per month.

The notice says turbidity levels are relatively low, but that their persistence is a concern. Normal turbidity levels at the town’s plant are below 0.3 turbidity units, the notice says.

Earlier notices and hydrant flushing

The town’s website lists a precautionary boil water advisory posted Oct. 13, 2026, and an update withdrawing it, posted the same day. The homepage listing does not give the reason for the advisory.

The Oakland Water Department also began hydrant flushing on the eastern part of the system on Oct. 14, 2026, to remove discolored water. The listing names Alexandar Lane, Glass Drive, Southern Industrial Park and Memorial Drive, and says the work would continue on Oct. 15.

What the notice does not say

The notice does not say what residents should do, and it does not describe corrective steps the town has taken. It also does not say whether the September violation and the October boil water advisory had the same cause.

Next public meeting

The Mayor and Town Council have a public meeting on Oct. 20, 2026, and its agenda is posted on the town’s website. The homepage listing does not give the meeting time or the agenda items.
